Faith & Reason: Discovering God Through Science

Faith & Reason: Discovering God Through Science

My parents told me that I started reading at two. My favorite books? Encyclopedias.

Growing up, I had an unusual fascination with science. Since my aunt worked at PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology), our home was filled with books about geology, earthquakes, and natural sciences. This early exposure shaped my curiosity and deep appreciation for the world around me.

As I grew older, people often asked how I could reconcile science and theology, or reason and faith. As an empiricist myself, I understand why this question arises. Many assume that these two disciplines contradict each other, yet I’ve always believed that they share a common pursuit: truth.

And I am not alone in this belief.

Great minds throughout history—Kepler (astronomy), Pascal (hydrostatics), Boyle (chemistry), Newton (calculus), Linnaeus (systematic biology), and Mendel (genetics)—were both scientists and people of faith. They explored the natural world with relentless curiosity, yet their discoveries only deepened their awe of God’s divine order. If they could harmonize faith and science, are we, in this modern age, missing something?

The Universe: A Reflection of Divine Intelligence

The more I study the world, the more I see the intricate design woven into every detail of creation. From the laws that govern the cosmos to the delicate balance of life on Earth, everything bears the marks of intelligent design—a system so precise, so purposeful, that it could not have come about by mere chance.

Einstein once said,
"Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe-a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble."

Indeed, the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together. (Psalm 24:1, Colossians 1:17)

Embracing Mystery & Wonder

No matter how much we discover, we will never run out of questions. As much as we proclaim ourselves as intelligent beings, our minds cannot fully grasp the magnitude of the One who created us. Science answers many things, but it also unveils more mysteries—space to imagine, to seek, to hope. And in that space, God meets us.

Whether we view the world through the lens of reason or faith, I am convinced of one thing: both paths lead to the same home, the same great love waiting to greet us warmly.
